Conscious Discipline & PBIS
At Hartsfield Elementary, Conscious Discipline and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) work together to create a safe, positive, and supportive learning environment for every student.
While PBIS establishes clear expectations for behavior and recognizes positive choices, Conscious Discipline provides the social-emotional skills students and adults need to meet those expectations. Together, these approaches help students develop self-regulation, build healthy relationships, and become responsible members of our school community.
How They Work Together
PBIS provides:
- Clear schoolwide behavior expectations
- Consistent routines and procedures
- Positive reinforcement and recognition
- Data-driven support for student success
Conscious Discipline provides:
- Self-regulation strategies
- Emotional awareness and resilience
- Relationship-building skills
- Conflict resolution and problem-solving
- Trauma-informed practices that foster safety and connection
A Powerful Partnership
At Hartsfield, we believe students are most successful when they feel safe, connected, and capable. By combining PBIS with Conscious Discipline, we create classrooms where students understand expectations, develop lifelong social-emotional skills, and are supported in making positive choices every day.
Our goal is not simply to manage behavior—it is to teach the skills students need to become confident learners, caring classmates, and responsible citizens.
Our School Expectations
Everything we do is grounded in our schoolwide expectations:
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Safe
- Be Ready to Learn
Conscious Discipline gives students the tools to practice these expectations, while PBIS provides the structure, encouragement, and recognition that help positive behaviors become lasting habits.
